1. What are skylights?
Skylights are horizontal windows placed in the roof of a room or building to let in natural sunlight. Skylights can be called a variety of things but mainly the term itself refers to anything that lets in natural light during the day. They admit more light per unit area than windows. They save a lot of energy and help to cut down on energy bills.
2. How do they work?
Skylights are placed on the roof and so catch the sun’s rays. The sunlight is then transmitted through the body of the skylight and into the room below. Skylights come in a range of shapes and sizes, but, generally people choose to get either a square, or tubular skylight installed. The choice made will often-times depend on the size of the room itself and also the direction of the roof-face involved. Inside the house a small opening will be cut into the ceiling, and your skylight will be fitted. You will immediately notice that your room will have a much brighter, airier feeling than before, and this is because of the natural light that your skylight is allowing through. Skylights are great for anyone who is concerned about energy costs and the environment, because they are one of the greenest ways known to light a room.
3.What is the difference between a roof window and a skylight?
Roof windows are generally installed in places that are with-in reach and allow for the window to be opened. We do stock electric roof windows if you would prefer to place your roof window in a higher location. They allow you to see the sky above and give a whole new perspective to the words “natural lighting.” Meanwhile, skylights for homes are traditionally constructed from 3 parts. A dome area that goes onto the roof, a shaft which allows the sunlight through the roof, and the diffuser which is the piece you see fitted into the ceiling. Because of this construction, you benefit from the sunlight whilst not being able to see the sky.
4. Do skylights allow into heat the room?
Skylights do allow a small amount of heat into the room. This is because there is a direct correlation between sunlight and heat. However, we offer skylights that have glazed and double-glazed diffusers and domes, this ensures that any heat gain is minimal and that during winter, you won’t lose heat through your skylight.
5. How do I know which skylight will suit my room?
There are several types of skylights. They may be square or tubular; they may vary in size depending upon the house and the roof. Generally, the smaller the room, the smaller the skylight. The larger the room, the larger the skylight.
